OpenAI Might Be In Over Its Head

Hey Reader,

Welcome back!

This week, OpenAI dominated headlines with reports of a major fracture between OpenAI and their primary investor, Microsoft. The fracture is so deep that OpenAI is reportedly considering the nuclear option of levying antitrust complaints at Microsoft.

And that's not the only front OpenAI is fighting on, with additional news coming out about Mark Zuckerberg offering ungodly amounts of money to attempt to poach top OpenAI researchers.

We'll break all that down in News That Matters, plus we'll show you how to use the exciting new Krea 1 image generator for free, share an awesome prompt you can use with ChatGPT or any other LLM, and more.

There's a ton to get to today, so let's get right to it...

🪄 App of the Week: Krea 1

Use Case: Hyper-Realistic Image Generation

Link: Krea V1 (Free, Not Sponsored!)

Why you should care:

Krea 1 is a new image generator created by Krea in partnership with Black Forest Labs (the team behind the incredible FLUX image models).

But this isn't just another image generator. They built Krea 1 to avoid the "AI image" feel that a lot of other image generators have. With Krea 1, you don't need to add "realistic" or "hyper realism" to your prompt. Krea 1 will default to realism unless you tell it otherwise.

Another standout feature of Krea 1 is that it’s lightning-fast. While Midjourney typically takes 15–30 seconds per image, Krea 1 delivers results in just 5–6 seconds on average.

And yes, it’s completely free to use, with daily credits that refresh automatically (enough for 6–8 generations a day).

Here's how to use it:

  1. Go to Krea's platform using the link above.
  2. Create a Krea account (or sign in with a Google account.)
  3. Navigate to Image Generator using the navbar at the top of the page.
  4. Check the model picker in the bottom left to ensure Krea 1 is the model selected.
  5. Type a prompt describing the image you want generated.
  6. Send the prompt!

Sam Altman says Meta tried and failed to poach OpenAI’s talent with $100M offers | TechCrunch
OpenAI and Microsoft Tensions Are Reaching a Boiling Point | Wall Street Journal

Why it matters:

OpenAI used to be a tiny research team solely focused on creating artificial intelligence that benefits all of humanity.

While that is still OpenAI's ultimate goal on paper, the reality is that the release of ChatGPT (and ChatGPT's subsequent dominance of the market) transformed OpenAI.

No longer a small, idealistic research team, OpenAI now represents both a threat and an opportunity to the rest of the tech industry. The threat is obvious: let OpenAI grow too large, and it will continue to steal increasing numbers of users from the current kings of the market.

But there's also opportunity.

Microsoft saw this years ago when it invested billions into a partnership with OpenAI. But now that partnership is straining, and it could reach a boiling point soon, with OpenAI recently threatening to levy official antitrust complaints against Microsoft and settle the disputes in court.

Partnerships and investments aren't the only opportunities, though. Mark Zuckerberg is taking another angle: poaching.

Meta's CEO has reportedly been offering contracts to OpenAI researchers with signing bonuses in the $100 million range. It's a good strategy from the Zuck, because successfully stealing any of OpenAI's top talent bolsters Meta's AI efforts and hinders OpenAI's in one move.

OpenAI may feel like the dominant force in AI right now, but zoom out and you’ll see they’re still a relatively small fish swimming in a pond full of sharks. Microsoft, Meta, Google, Apple, Amazon—these companies have far more capital, more infrastructure, and much deeper roots in our daily lives.

OpenAI's success with ChatGPT has put them in the spotlight, but that spotlight also makes them a target. The rest of 2025 could be packed with stories like this, as OpenAI tries to hold its ground while the biggest names in tech close in from every direction.

📝 Prompt of the Week: Get Expert Feedback That Matches Your Voice

Prompt Formula:

I’m writing a [FORMAT] about [TOPIC], and I’d like your help critiquing it and suggesting specific areas for improvement. We’ll do this in two steps. First, I’ll share a sample of my best writing just to give you a feel for my tone and style. Don’t critique this part, just make some notes about my tone and style and move on to step two. Then I’ll share the actual draft I want feedback on. When you critique it, please call out specific lines and follow this format for each suggestion: include the existing line, a brief critique, and your suggested revision. Are you ready?

Quick Description:

This prompt is perfect for getting high-quality writing feedback that actually matches your voice. By first giving ChatGPT a sample of your best work, you train it to understand your tone, style, and preferences before it ever touches your draft.

The critique format it uses is structured and specific, with each suggestion including the original line, a short explanation of what could be better, and a concrete revision.

How to Use:

  1. Copy the above prompt formula.
  2. Paste it into ChatGPT. (Or your preferred AI model, as this prompt works with any LLM!)
  3. Replace [FORMAT] with the kind of piece you’re writing (e.g., blog post, essay, newsletter, script).
  4. Replace [TOPIC] with what your piece is about.
  5. Send the prompt.
  6. When ChatGPT responds, share your writing sample (the one not to be critiqued).
  7. Then, share the actual draft you want feedback on.
  8. Review the feedback and implement any suggestions you like!
