Microsoft is spending $80 billion this fiscal year to build out the infrastructure for its AI ambitions, while the company didn’t say AI caused these layoffs, it’s clear AI is reshaping what tech giants need to stay competitive. Many of the cuts hit software engineers and product managers. That’s the same group CEO Satya Nadella recently said is increasingly working alongside AI tools that now write 20 to 30 percent of the code for some Microsoft projects. You don’t need as many hands on keyboards when Copilot is handling part of the heavy lifting. But it’s not just engineers. These layoffs affected every level and team, with a particular focus on trimming management. In this new world where AI accelerates productivity and coordination, Microsoft feels it can achieve its goals with fewer people involved. These are not the moves of a struggling company. They’re the moves of a company reorganizing itself around a new technological foundation. The timelines are shifting. We knew AI would drive layoffs and force major realignments at massive companies.
